My League Journey
My name is Matt, but some or most of you may know me as RealLifeMoon from Twitch or YouTube or wherever else. I figured a good place to start telling you about myself is my journey in League. I started from the absolute bottom of the ranked ladder and I have climbed nearly to the top over the better part of a decade. I have learned about the game and battled with understanding myself for years in an effort to be the best I can be.
My ranked progression:
- ✦Season 7 - Bronze 5 → Gold 4
- ✦Season 8 - Gold 4 → Platinum 2
- ✦Season 9 - Platinum 2 → Diamond 5
- ✦Season 10 - Stuck Diamond 4
- ✦Season 11 - Couldn't even hit Diamond 4
- ✦Season 12 - Stuck Diamond 4
- ✦Season 13 - Diamond 4 → Master 176
- ✦Season 14 - Master 313 peak
- ✦Season 15 - Grandmaster 592 peak
When I first started I was absolutely horrible. It took me many months for things to click, but once they did I shot up through the lower ranks pretty quickly. For the first few years I played mostly Jungle and enjoyed things like Dr. Mundo, Nunu, and Singed top lane. I ended up hitting Diamond for the first time playing Kindred and that is where things took a negative spiral for me. I succumbed to negative influences and got increasingly toxic. Was I the worst of the worst? Far from it. I was however a person that I look back on and I am not proud of it. After years and breaks from the game and a deteriorating ability to even play the game, I took a long break in season 12 and I figured that would be my official retirement from the game.
Towards the end of season 12 I had the amazing opportunity to attend the DRX v SKT worlds finals and that got me thinking that I had unfinished business with the game. I came back with the intention of doing things right. I made the decision to take things seriously, get coaching, and actually listen to the coaches. While I learned a ton from my coaches and I am forever grateful for that, the hardest work was attacking the way I viewed the game and my relationship with it. Since then, despite climbing from Diamond 4 to Grandmaster at the time of writing this, I believe that the personal work I have put in has paid dividends in both my personal and League lives and that it is also nowhere near done. All of this led me to major in Psychology in college to help me understand people more and it heavily influences how I approach and teach the game to this day.
What is your deal with Diana
I believe Diana is the most fun champion in League. I played mostly Jungle for my entire time playing League, but in Season 12, I figured that I wanted to hit Diamond again as I had not hit it in well over a year at that point. I took the advice from a coach to make my champion pool smaller and decided on one tricking something instead. At the time I was playing jungle and struggling in Platinum (before Emerald existed) and I took the opportunity to learn a new champion that I hadn't played much of before. I picked Diana and despite not touching Diamond for well over a year at that time, I was able to climb to Diamond in less than 2 weeks in Jungle with Diana.
Playing Diana felt like a much needed break from the monotony that most other champions felt like. I loved what it felt like to simply press my buttons while playing her. The issue I found was that I absolutely hated her playstyle in the Jungle. I thought the full clear into repeat pipeline was incredibly unsatisfying. I had played full clear junglers for a while at that point and I figured my interest in approaching the game had changed over time. That is when I had the idea to try her mid lane.
At first, playing Diana in Mid Lane was going surprisingly well. I had hit Diamond 2 very quickly for the first time ever, I loved the feeling of having such an oppressive lane phase with so much snowball potential. Soon after though, I tumbled all the way down into Platinum and got stuck there for many months. This is when I took my break and almost quit the game until having the opportunity to go to World's Finals. Since then, the rest is history. I love playing the champion still after thousands of games, I have had times where I thought I might play something else but nothing ever stuck. I don't see this changing for a while.
Who is Matt
For those interested, I am a guy in his mid 20s. I have a BS in Psychology and professional experience in Event Management, College Esports, and Property Management. My college experience picking a major was an absolute nightmare, I swapped back and forth between Psychology, Pre-Med, Business, Math, and Economics. I ended up sticking with Psychology because League gave me an interesting perspective on how people operate and how people react to different stimuli. Alongside that, I am a very introspective person and learning something about Psychology felt like I might be able to articulate things about myself in a better way. Outside of League, I listen to a lot of music (mostly the metal that you hear on my stream), enjoy TV shows, and read books. The book that comes to mind first for me as one everyone should check out is The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus, I think it has interesting things worth digesting.
My long term goals
I want to be the best Diana player. I don't exactly know what that means at the time of writing this or exactly how that is calculated, but I think it is more of a feeling I may have some day. The start of that is being a Challenger player. Beyond that, a goal of mine is to bring some life to the Diana community. I feel that high elo one tricks hold a sort of responsibility to give back to their community and I think the Diana community has so much room for growth. Whether through content, guides, or coaching, I want to feel like I am leaving the community in a better place than when I joined it.
Outside of League I also have some goals. I am sharing these because maybe they inspire someone in some way. I have goals in life for me to be the kind of person that can help people at a high level. I am not sure exactly what that means as of now, but I am actively taking steps towards going back to school and pursuing something along the lines of a PhD in Psychology or an MD. The start for now is educating myself and learning how to best work and talk with others. These are things that inspire me to do a bit of reading and coaching to be able to grow those skills in ways I know how at this point in my life.
